Considerations
The Portfolio Overview page displays by default after you log into your GainsKeeper account. This page lists each brokerage account you have entered into GainsKeeper, and provides quick links to some of the more commonly referenced sections of your account. You can also retrieve messages from this page. If there are any alerts or message that require your attention, a message will display at the top of this page. Click here to view an example of an alert.
Note: If you import a transaction without a cost basis, a pop-up window displays when you log into GainsKeeper. This pop-up window enables you to add cost information.
Click any of the links below for additional information on the sections on the Overview page.
Whether you import transactions, or manually record transactions, an Alert message displays on the Portfolio Overview page if your portfolio is missing purchase information. Click the update now link to access the Initial Baseline Process page. You can then enter the Total Cost as of the Baseline Date in the field provided, or you can use BasisPro to find out the cost basis of the position.
Subscription/Trades/BasisPro™ Calcs
Click this link to access the Subscription/Trade Buckets page. This page enables you to upgrade your account and purchase additional trades.
The Owner section of the display is listed first. An initial owner is generated from the name given during account set up, and additional owners can be added in My Settings. For example, if you and your spouse file taxes jointly, you will want to track all of your investment accounts in a single GainsKeeper Account. Both you and your spouse are "owners". Once new owners are added, brokerage accounts can be assigned to specific owners (Please note that all brokerage accounts within a subscription should be for a single Tax Payer ID). Clicking on the highlighted Owner brings up the Portfolio view for all accounts listed for that owner.
If a brokerage is included in our partner list, the display will include a lightning bolt graphic to the left of the account description:
A blue lightning bolt indicates that the brokerage account has not been linked for importing. Link the account by clicking the lightning bolt and filling in the required information.
A yellow lightning bolt indicates that the brokerage account has been linked. Click on the yellow lightning bolt to bring up the import page for that brokerage.
If a brokerage is not included in our partner list, no lightning bolt graphic will display.
Click the lightning bolt icon to import transactions, from your brokerage account, to your GainsKeeper account.
The Broker section of the display is populated automatically when a brokerage is selected from our partner list. Clicking on the highlighted broker link will bring up the import page for that broker. For brokerage accounts that are not included in our partner list, this description will be defined by the user during the set up for the account. If your brokerage is not listed on the partner list, please contact GainsKeeper Support and we'll contact your brokerage.
The Account section displays the account description defined by the user during account set up. This can be an account number or any other unique name that the user can use to easily differentiate between multiple accounts. Clicking on the highlighted account description will bring up the portfolio view for that account.
The Tax section of the display indicates the tax status defined by the user during account set up. Taxable accounts will display as T, Non-Taxable accounts will display as NT and Mark-to-Market accounts will display as MTM.
The Market Value section of the display reflects Unrealized Long with deducted Unrealized Short positions calculated against current prices.
The Gain/Loss section of the display reflects potential Gain/Loss after closing all Unrealized Long and Unrealized Short positions, calculated from cost basis against current market prices.
This %+- section of the display reflects the percent gain/loss figure of original cost basis.
The Trades section of the display provides quick links to manually record trades (Add) to your account or edit trades in your account.
In addition to the overview for brokerage accounts, this page includes personal investment tips for tax-smart trading, market data for referencing quotes, alerts to certain issues in the account, messages received from support staff, and quick links to useful sections of the account.
