Question
What is a corporate action?
Answer
A corporate action is any material change to a security. This can be as simple as a name change, stock dividend, or a stock split; but also includes reverse splits, mergers, spin-offs and liquidations. In many cases, a corporate action results in a new position or a change to the cost basis of a security. GainsKeeper monitors all mandatory corporate actions to U.S. equities and automatically adjusts each of your stock investments.
If a stock split occurred, your share amount will increase, your overall cost will remain the same and your per cost share will change.
If a merger occurred, you will no longer see the security that was acquired in your account. You will see the new security. You will also see the corporate action in your symbol history. You can view the history from GainsTracker by selecting Symbol Details. Using this feature, you can view all of your transactions that have occurred on this particular symbol, such as buys, sell, corporate actions and wash sale adjustments.
